Joseph W. Walther, age 58, of Lake Bluff, IL, passed away October 22, 2023 peacefully in his sleep at home. Joe was born on November 29, 1964 in Lake Forest, IL to the late Bernard A. Walther and Ruth M. Boutin Walther. Joe was raised in Lake Forest for the first 8 years of his life. The family moved to Waukegan where he was raised with his siblings. Joe was a graduate of Waukegan West High School and later earned his bachelor's degree from Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, IA. Following the distinguished family career path, Joe dedicated his professional life to law enforcement, serving as a Correctional Officer for 28 years before retiring. His commitment to maintaining peace and order was a testament to his strong sense of duty and his deep love for his community. An avid history buff, Joe had a deep appreciation for the past and its influence on the present. He was a passionate fan of the Chicago Bears, and his enthusiasm for the team was contagious. His love for travel led him to many beautiful places, with Galena and Germany being among his favorites. He particularly enjoyed attending Octoberfest in Germany, a tradition that combined his love for travel, history, and good company. Joe was also a wine collector, and he took great pleasure in discovering new wines and sharing them with friends and family. His other hobbies included reading and gardening, activities that allowed him to enjoy quiet moments of solitude and reflection. He had a special place in his heart for his two cats, Abbey and Natty, who were his constant companions and brought him much joy. Music and movies were another source of enjoyment for Joe. Joe will be remembered for his warm smile, his generous spirit, and his ability to make people laugh. He had a knack for making everyone feel welcome and valued, and his presence always brightened up the room. His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is preceded in death by his father Bernard A. Walther. He is survived by his mother, Ruth M. Boutin Walther; siblings Bernadette Walther, Bernard Jr. (Jacqueline); niece Sydney and nephews Ian and Grayson Walther. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at St. Mary Cemetery, Lake Forest, IL followed by a memorial luncheon at Gorton Center, 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest.
