Phyllis Copp Metcalf

Phyllis Jean Copp Metcalf, 90 of Lake Forest/Lake Bluff, died September 21, 2016. Born July 21, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois to Howard F. and Marjorie E. Copp. She was an amazing person, born in the year of the Tiger. Phyllis grew up on the North Shore of Chicago, getting her early education in Ravinia and Glencoe schools, while completing High School at New Trier. She attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. She was an incredibly strong and adventurous woman coming out of college working for the New Yorker magazine in Chicago traveling to Europe by herself and with friends, one time riding her bicycle across the continent. This passion for travel and leadership also led her to being a tour guide and embracing world travel. In 1952 Phyllis found her true love and married John Tucker Metcalf and subsequently brought three children into the world. This didn’t slow Phyllis’ ambition. She started three cottage industries and still had time for leading Girl Scouts, giving ice skating lessons on her backyard ice skating rink, teaching, playing tennis, camping, traveling and of course supporting her children in their activities. She loved sports both as a participant and avid watcher. She was a state ranked badminton player, coached basketball at Northwestern University, tried riding a motocross bike and water skied into her sixties. She loved tennis and playing golf into her 80’s until Parkinson’s disease took away her ability to play. The ukulele band in Deerfield, Hummers and Strummers, was one of her favorite pastimes, and she worked in the Presbyterian Church Rummage Sale until three years ago. She was a past resident of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff and lived the last six years as a resident of Sedgebrook Retirement Community in Lincolnshire, Illinois. She loved the diversity of the world and embraced visitors from every corner of it. She genuinely loved people and always stepped in when needed. Her ever present smile will be missed.
